New Zealand News
Early in December I spent a few days in the Abel Tasman area at the top
west of the South Island. Abel Tasman National Park is renowned for its
golden beaches, sculptured granite cliffs, and its world-famous coastal
track which emerges onto golden-sand beaches fringed by native forest and
sheltered azure waters. With a mild climate it's a good place to visit at
any time of the year but, as the most visited National Park in the country,
Christmas through to late February can be a little too busy and bookings
are absolutely essential. In early December it was quiet and the weather
perfect for walking.
At 51 kilometres, it can take 3 to 5 days to walk but you can experience
this idyllic coast in a single day on the Vista Scenic Cruise or Vigour
Water Taxi service. Stop off at a protected cove or choose a walking or
sea kayaking option.
The coastal track is managed and maintained to a very high standard by
the Department
of Conservation. The track is well-formed and heavy hiking boots are
not necessary but you need to check the tides before departing as part of
the walk is on tidal flats. For details on walking times, tidal crossings,
track profile, etc. see Department of Conservation's Coastal Track site.
Accommodation along the track is in campsites, huts or lodges depending
on your prefered style and budget. You can also walk in and walk out again
from either end of the track in a day. The track starts from Marahau, a
short drive from Motueka and most walkers finish at Totaranui where you
can take a water taxi back to the start of the track and collect your car
or campervan.
GINZ.com / Guest New Zealand can arrange accommodation in and around the
park and we recommend Awaroa
Lodge, Abel
Tasman Marahau Lodge, Ocean
View Chalets at Marahau and the Old
Schoolhouse Cottage at Kina Beach. We can also arrange water taxi transfers,
sea kayaking, cruises and guided walking with Abel
Tasman Wilsons Experience.
If you are staying in Nelson, try to include at least one day in this beautiful
area - Abel Tasman Wilson's Experiences one-day itineraries with pick ups
and drop offs in Nelson include a launch cruise with walking or sea kayaking
option.

Australia News
For many Australians, the Margaret
River region of Western Australia provides the ultimate Australian holiday
spot. There's perhaps no better destination in Australia to kick back and
unwind surrounded by nature than the Augusta Margaret River region. With
its prestigious luxury retreats, world-class wineries, stunning natural
landscapes and relaxing spa treatments the Margaret River region lends itself
perfectly to the ultimate getaway weekend or somewhere to stay and explore
for a week or longer.
Stunning natural landscapes, cosmopolitan café strips and world-class wineries
are at one's fingertips in this glorious region; where the lifestyle norm
is relaxation, indulgence and kicking back in nature's playground. Margaret
River is a region where natural contrasts blend perfectly with sophistication,
style and luxury; whereby country charm and cosmopolitan charisma come together
to create the essential Margaret River experience.
The wild, rugged beauty of the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge with its dramatic
cliffs and rocks, the tranquil aqua waters of the many protected bays, the
local vineyards covered in rising mist in the early morning all contribute
to outstanding visual splendour. It’s a photographer’s dream.
For a more hands on approach when visiting the area the intrepid traveller
can journey along the Cape to Cape Track, stretching from Cape Leeuwin
to Cape Naturaliste. The total journey takes between 5-6 days with plenty
of delightful stops and welcome camping rests along the walk. For those
a little less adventurous, many sections of the trail make for a most enjoyable
short stroll. Section maps are available in both visitor centres.
Pinnacle
Tours runs a full day tour from Perth to the Margaret River region and
GINZ can arrange accommodation in Perth or the Margaret River region as
well as domestic flights to Perth from all major Australian cities.
