GINZ.com Newsletter
January 2006 Vol 1 No# 101
Kia ora and best wishes from the staff at GINZ.com, Guest in New Zealand,
for the New Year. The sun is shining and Christchurch seems very quiet this
month with a lot of families away at rivers, lakes and beaches, tramping,
boating and camping or staying in baches or cribs and making the most of
the long hot days.
We look forward to assisting you or any friends and family who might wish
to visit New Zealand, Australia or the Pacific Islands in 2006. Our goal
is to provide you with the best information, best value and top quality
friendly service in accommodation, rentals and activities to make your holiday
unique and memorable.
All the very best from the Team at GINZ.com

New Zealand News
Welcome to Te Ara - New
Zealand's online encyclopedia - launched in February 2005 and apparently
eight years in the making. In Maori, Te Ara means ‘the pathway’.
The Maori people trace their origins to eastern Polynesia, where their
ancestors set off in canoes and travelled many thousands of kilometres across
the Pacific Ocean to New Zealand. Maori define themselves by their iwi (tribes)
who each tell powerful stories of famous ancestors and voyaging canoes.
The encounter with the European settlers, and the struggle for control of
the land and resources, had a dramatic effect on the Maori population, its
economy and way of life. The site goes on to describe how European settlers
colonised the land and developed a trading economy, the individuals who
have shaped the country and the development of a 'kiwi culture'.
The New
Zealand in brief section gives an excellent snapshot under headings
such as Natural Environment, Sport and Leisure, Arts, Government and Society.
The site is a government initiative and will be developed further. At the
moment it is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to further their background
reading or learn more about New Zealand prior to visiting. For anyone who
prefers a book to web, I can recommend historian Michael King's 'The Penguin
History of New Zealand'.

Australia News
Separated from mainland Australia by the 240 kilometres (150 miles) stretch
of Bass Strait, Tasmania is a land apart - a place of wild, mountainous
and beautiful landscapes; friendly, welcoming people; temperate climate;
quality wines and food; a spirited history; and a creative arts community
- all wrapped up in a relaxed lifestyle.
More than 40 percent of the island is protected as World Heritage Area,
national parks and state and marine reserves. In 2004, it was ranked third
in the world for stewardship of its environment by National Geographic Traveler
magazine's Sustainable Tourism Initiative.
The 2833 km coastline, heritage towns, fertile farmland and boutique wineries
of the North and the white sand beaches and holiday and fishing villages
in the east and south all provide plentiful opportunities for bushwalking,
fishing, boating and good eating. The island is easy to explore on your
own in a rental car and GINZ can make suggestions for driving routes and
accommodation.
For those keen on fishing, Ausprey
Tours are considered one of the most professional guiding services in
Tasmania for wild brown and rainbow trout.
The Discover
Tasmania website is an excellent resource and has some good suggestions
for itineraries.
