New Zealand News
Easter weekend is Warbirds
over Wanaka, a highlight for aviation enthusiasts everywhere. This is
the 10th Show established by New Zealand's famous aviator and warplane enthusiast,
Sir Tim Wallis, who owns many of the planes which take part in the displays,
attracts 100,000 visitors over the 3 day event. Aircraft which take part
in the air show include classics such as the Spitfire, the Soviet Yakovlev
and Polikarpov, Messerschmitt and a Fokker Dr.1 Triplane, made famous by
the Red Baron (Manfred von Richthofen). Wanaka is surely the most spectacular
venue in the world for an airshow. Nestled on the shores of an azure blue
lake amongst the mighty peaks of the Southern Alps, the natural amphitheatre
created by these mountains provides a backdrop of stunning scenery.
The
Arrowtown Autumn Festival - Arrowtown, just North of Queenstown was
a thriving Gold Town on the banks of the Arrow River, settled by miners
in 1862 and now a beautiful and historic town which benefits from the planting
of Oaks, Sycamores, Cork Elms and Ashes made 150 years ago. Later plantings
of flowering cherries and Rowans have carried on the tradition. Arrowtown
is now known nationally and internationally for its stunning Autumn colour.
Artists and photographers are drawn by the clear light and the reds and
golds and the people of Arrowtown celebrate with the annual Autumn Festival.
Lord of the
Rings Exhibition at Te Papa, Wellington. After a record-breaking season
at Te Papa in 2002–3, this exhibition toured to the likes of Boston, London,
Sydney, and Singapore – until over one million people had seen it.
While the exhibition travelled, The Return of the King, the third movie
in the trilogy, was released, and more exhibits were added. Now the exhibition
is back home, and showing at Te Papa for one last time. In addition to the
exhibits added while it was on the road, it boasts an array of completely
new items, never seen anywhere else in the world.
Exquisite costumes and jewellery, finely worked weapons and armour, painstakingly
created miniatures, not to mention the inside story on Weta Digital’s groundbreaking
animation work? It’s all here. Along with revealing video interviews and
a chance for visitors to try out some of the technology themselves!
This exhibition offers a last chance to see, first-hand, the astonishing
level of design and crafting that went into every aspect of The Lord of
the Rings motion picture trilogy.
