New Zealand News
Over the last 4 years, New Zealander Jonathan Kruse has been developing
innovative portable GPS technology that can automatically inform and entertain
travellers on key points of interest as they journey throughout New Zealand.
The commentary includes over 1200 points of interest, covering New Zealand's
history, people, native birds, plants and animals, geographical landmarks
and scenic attractions. Information was meticulously researched and then
recorded with appropriate music and sound effects to ensure an audio experience
that is informative and entertaining.
As well as acting as your personal tour guide, KRUSE
also becomes your personal radio station. Once a commentary point has completed
playing, you will then be entertained by music until you reach the next
point of interest. Once you reach the next point of interest, the music
currently playing will automatically fade out to allow you to hear the new
commentary point.
Using KRUSE is easy.
All you do is place KRUSE on the vehicle dash, plug it in to the cigarette
lighter, tune the radio to the correct frequency and you are ready to go-
data is sent via orbiting satellites to the GPS co-ordinates in your car.
A very useful and practical piece of technology for the traveler of today!

Australia News
Michael and Pamela have just returned from a week in the Alice Springs
area where the hired a campervan and spent time visiting sites and accommodations
to get some first hand knowledge on the best way to see and explore the
area and of course the best places to eat! If you area thinking about including
Alice Springs in your next visit to Australia, contact Michael.
They flew to Alice Springs from Sydney - temperatures there are around 38
degrees Celsius at the moment but can get up to 50 Celsius in the summer
(December/ January).
Alice is a small outback town with a population of around 28,000. It is
well serviced with supermarkets and cafes and a good place to stock up before
your drive to Ayers Rock resort, around 450 km away and a 5-6 hour drive
in a campervan or 4-5 hours by car. The Outback sealed roads are long and
straight and make for easy driving. There are plenty of tours and activities
available from Alice Springs including early morning camel
tours, motorcycle tours in to the outback and hot
air ballooning and other places worth visiting are the Flying
Doctors Museum and the Reptile
Centre.
Uluru/ Ayres Rock Resort is about 15 km from the town and inside the National
Park. Most people visit in the early morning - the 9.7 km walk around the
base of the rock takes about 2 hours and water bottles and sunhats are essential
- local Aboriginal companies also offer guided tours. The area can be very
busy and touristy but the sheer vastness means you can get away and walk
by yourselves to fully appreciate the landscape and grandeur. The Olgas
are another worthwhile trip about an hours drive from Ayers Rock - this
is a very nice place to view the sunset. The other area to drive to from
Ayers Rock Resort is Kings Canyon - the 3 hour rim walk offers spectacular
views in to the canyon and is better done later in the afternoon. Kings
Canyon also has helicopter flights and ballooning as well as Camel Tours
is you don't feel like walking the area.
Michael's recommendations for accommodation at Ayers
Rock Resort are Lost Camel, Sails in the Desert, First Desert Gardens
and Emu Walks Apartments. For those with a bigger budget, the exclusive
Longitude 131
is the place to stay with all food, drinks and tours included in the rates.
