Yes, nearly that time of the year again!
The American Express Queenstown Winter Festival is on this year from 27th June - 6th July with more than 60 events happening and a general party atmosphere. If you prefer a quieter time and more space on the ski fields, the school holiday dates for New Zealand primary and secondary schools are 5th - 20th July 2008 so it may best to book outside of these.
For Queenstown,
our suggestion would be 6 nights at Browns
Boutique Hotel, conveniently situated within easy walking distance of
the cafes, bars and nightclubs and including a full cooked breakfast, rental
car with unlimited km, 5 day Ski Superpass for Coronet Peak, Remarkables,
Snowpark or Treble Cone Ski Fields and full gear hire for the week at $NZ
1806 per person. Transfers by coach up the field are also included if you
prefer not to drive the mountain road.
The Superpass also includes the SnowParkNZ, 35km from Wanaka on the Crown
Range Road. The Superpass does not include Cardrona Ski Field and we can
quote separately for passes here if you wish to use this field only. Cardrona
is a great field for families - the best way to ski here is probably to
take a 4 out of 6 day pass which costs NZ$145 for a child, NZ$240 for a
student and NZ$290 for an adult.
Millbrook
Resort is a great option too - close to Arrowtown and excellent restaurants
and bars and very close to the base of Coronet Peak. Millbrook has a range
of room options available but all are spacious and quiet with beautiful
mountain views, a great restaurant on site, fantastic cooked breakfasts
and a gym, indoor heated pool, tennis courts, golf and day spa. This is
a great place for families as well as couples or groups of friends. The
same deal here comes in at NZ$2116 per person.
For Wanaka,
an hour over the hill and with a more laid back atmosphere but great skiing
at the more challenging Treble Cone we recommend 6 nights at River
Run Lodge, 5 minutes outside of town and including breakfast, the rental
car and Superpass for NZ$2076 per person or Te
Wanaka Lodge in central Wanaka at NZ$1328 per person.
