January 2008 Vol 1 No# 117
January is holiday month here in New Zealand, especially for those with
school age children, and the temperatures have been soaring. School goes
back early February and right though until May we can expect more settled
weather. Although the evenings begin to cool in the southern and higher
altitude areas, the next 4 months are great for traveling throughout our
country.
Congratulations to Claremont
Country Lodge, New Zealand's only 2008 Grand Award winner in the prestigious
Andrew Harper Hideaway Report. Claremont Country Lodge is a delightful 5
star luxury hosted guest lodge set in a huge nature reserve close to Christchurch
and the North Canterbury wineries.
If your plans for 2008 include travel in New Zealand, Australia or the
South Pacific islands, we would love to hear from you. If you have any friends
and family considering a trip, we would be grateful for your referral.
All the very best from the Team

Warbirds
Over Wanaka is happening again this Easter weekend, 21,22 and 23 March
2008 at the Wanaka airfield. This event, the largest warbird airshow in
the southern hemisphere, has been running since 1988 and attracts close
to 100,000 aircraft enthusiasts from around the world. Some of the most
famous warbirds in the world join forces with the classic aircraft of yesteryear
and the modern jets of today to present a veritable feast of aviation attractions.
On the ground, a variety of military vehicles, vintage machinery and vehicles
and an aviation trade expo operate. Wanaka town will be settling into Autumn
colours and the lake and mountains provide a stunning backdrop and the atmosphere
is relaxed and fun. Be sure to include a day or 2 in the area if you are
travelling in the South island in March - GINZ can arrange accommodation
in Wanaka or if you are travelling by motorhome
we can recommend a couple of great spots close to the action.
The new Omaka Aviation
Heritage Centre on the outskirts of Blenheim in Marlborough is also
highly recommended for anyone with even a vague interest in aircraft and
war memorabilia and with sets provided by Peter Jackson's WETA studios and
allot of his personal collection including an original cross insignia from
Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Barron's, crashed
tri-plane.

Australia News
There’s something about the ‘buzz’ in Melbourne Australia that ignites
the compulsion to explore. It’s not unusual for weary travelers to feel
renewed energy on arrival and keen to sample the fabulous café life, markets
and tours on offer – of course no visit to Melbourne would be complete without
a food tour.
Michael and wife Pam recently treated themselves to a personalized ‘foodie’
tour in Melbourne by chef and author, Alan
Campion. They were collected by mini bus with other like-minded ‘foodies’
and whisked off to St Ali a wonderful rustic coffee-roasting establishment,
to sample a premium espresso. A South Melbourne Market displayed a stunning
array of every fish, meat and vegetable variety and a succulent oyster was
sampled before moving on to a bakery, Let-them-eat-cake. Pam was fascinated
by the stunning artisan cakes and pastries made in the European tradition.
Among the many highlights of the tour was the mouth-watering gelato shop,
the Oliveria in Prahran and the Oriental Tea House. Michael was impressed
with the generosity of the staff at these establishments both with their
hospitality and time.
Alan Campion is an affable host and passionate about food. He regularly
updates his itineraries to include the latest handcrafted produce and trends
and as an added bonus, will recommend only those restaurants he has personally
sampled.
For the last two nights of their whirlwind trip, Michael and Pam stayed
at Fountain
Terrace, a traditional bed and breakfast with the charm and elegance
of a European hotel. They loved the hosts and owners Penny and Heikki Minkkinen
and found it a great alternative to city hotels. The location, in St Kilda
and only a block away from Fitzroy Street, also assured them of a restful
sleep.
