Australia News
The 1500 km drive from Alice Springs to Darwin along the Stuart Highway,
known locally as the Explorers Way or simply the 'Track', is an ideal campervan
trip for travellers who wish to experience the true outback atmosphere of
rural Australia and meet some 'true blue fair dinkum Aussies along the way'.
The origins of the Stuart Highway lie with the Overland Telegraph Line,
completed in 1872 to establish communications between Australia and London.
Up until 1942 it remained just a bush track between telegraph stations until
the need for an all weather military transport road resulted in a massive
construction project to create a highway to get 200,000 troops and supplies
up to protect the North of Australia.
Since Neville Shute's classic novel 'A Town Like Alice' was published,
Alice has become the most well known rural town in Australia. Leaving Alice,
you head North for Tennant Creek, the centre of Australia's last great gold
rush. The town sprang up overnight in 1931 after a worker discovered nuggets
while digging telegraph line posts. Mining still occurs here and visitors
are able to experience an underground replica mine on Battery Hill, owned
and run by one of the original miners in the area. Travelling further North
to Larrimah, the highway is supported by many roadside inns and rural towns
and through large pastoral runs that are part of the cattle empires owned
by media mogul Kerry packer and the Sultan of Brunei.
Katherine is the town where the 'Red Centre' begins to merge with the tropical
greens of the 'Top End'. A must see is the stunning Katherine Gorge, also
known as Nitmiluk, a series of 13 separate canyons cut over a period of
25 million years. A boat cruise or kayak trip is a worthwhile excursion
here and freshwater crocodiles are happy to share their watering holes with
keen swimmers. At the small gold mining settlement of Pine Creek you can
choose to take the Arnhem Highway onto the Kakadu National Park or complete
the Explorers Way trail which takes you onto Emerald Springs, Hayes Creek
and Adelaide River.
The bustling commercial capital of the Northern Territory, Darwin is home
to 50 ethnic groups, a vibrant nightlife and the famous Mindil markets with
quality arts and crafts including Aboriginal, music and entertainment. Darwin
completes the transition from remote red parched desert environment to the
lush tropical shores of the Timor Sea.

Pacific Island News
The development of a perfect tropical escape was the vision of Emmy-award
winning Australian television producer Henry Crawford, and his creative
partner, Martin Livingston, a fifth generation European Fijian. The result
is Vatulele (pronounced ‘Vah-too-lay-lay’), on one of the southern islands
of the Fijian group. It took two years to find the ideal South Seas location,
and three more to enhance the natural beauty of the site with man-made luxury
where guests could escape the pressures of their busy lifestyles. Set on
a magnificent lagoon, the beauty of the site is coupled with a unique architectural
style which includes a wide range of 'hand made' details. This stunning
combination has made the resort a favourite in magazines all over the world
that feature architecture, style and interior design.
Vatulele was voted Fiji's top resort in the Fiji Excellence in Tourism
Awards (Dec 2004). The resort is 'all inclusive' and accommodates just 19
couples. In keeping with the owner's philosophy, there are no TV's, newspapers,
telephones, money transactions or shoes. Vatulele is generally acknowledged
as one of the most outstanding 'bare-foot' resorts in the world.
