Day 1.
Arrive Auckland. View the city from the Sky Tower, visit the Americas Cup Village and explore the shops and cafes of Parnell. Stay The Sebel Suites.
Day 2.
Travel to Paihia in the Bay of Islands (240 km, 150 miles, 3 hours). Visit the historic Treaty House at Waitangi and take a boat trip to Russell across the bay. Stay at The Totaras, Paihia.
Day 3.
Take in some big game fishing, visit the beautiful Kauri Forests on the West Coast, take a trip to Cape Reinga via Ninety Mile Beach, go sailing, take a diving trip to the Poor Knights Islands, visit the Hokianga Harbour or just relax and enjoy the sunshine, uncrowded beaches and warm waters. Stay at The Totaras again.
Day 4.
Drive to the Coromandel Peninsula (370 km, 230 miles, 5 hours). Drive via Auckland, check in with the accommodation and go for bush walks and swimming in the afternoon. Stay at Thorold.
Day 5:
Drive to Rotorua (165 km, 100 miles, 2 hours) You can take a detour to Waitomo and visit the underground glow worm caves or spend the rest of the day exploring the thermal resort of Rotorua, its geysers and mudpools, enjoy a mineral Spa, visit a Marae and take in a Maori cultural show this evening. Stay at The Lake House Bed and Breakfast.
Day 6.
Fly from Rotorua to Queenstown. Plenty to do here for the rest of the afternoon — try horse trekking, a boat trip on the lake, white water rafting, jet boating, a round of golf, a wine tour or shopping. Enjoy a meal out at one of Queenstowns many top restaurants. Stay at Aspen On Queenstown Hotel.
Day 7.
Take a day trip to Milford Sound (optional). Fly into the Sound and take a boat trip to experience the wildlife and scenery. Return to Queenstown. Stay at Aspen On Queenstown Hotel.
Day 8.
Drive to Fox Glacier (380 km, 235 miles, 5 hours) A scenic flight by helicopter (optional) is definitely recommended for the best views of the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers and Mt Cook. Stay Mount Cook View Motel.
Day 9.
Drive to Greymouth (200 km, 124 miles, 2.5 hours) via Franz Josef and Hokitika. See Jade carvers at work here. Leave your rental car at the railway station in Greymouth and travel on the TranzAlpine train back to Christchurch (train departs at 2.30). Alternatively, Christchurch is 258 km, 4 hours drive. Stay at The Manor.
Day 10.
Visit the Arts Centre and botanical gardens and enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the many riverside cafes before departing from Christchurch.
