For anyone considering a ski holiday in New Zealand this winter, we have all the options covered from campervans and ski passes combined in the Skiwi deals, great family apartment style accommodation and ski pass combinations through to luxury ski lodge accommodation. While the Queenstown, Wanaka and Mt. Hutt have the largest ski areas in New Zealand, there are plenty more smaller fields right throughout the Southern Alps offering good facilities and in some cases, much cheaper skiing.

Close to Christchurch and popular with the locals are Porter Heights, Craigieburn and Mt Cheeseman and in the Mackenzie Basin, Roundhill at Tekapo (good for learners and families), Lake Ohau for more experienced skiers, and the Tasman Glacier.

Skiing on the Tasman Glacier at the base of Mt Cook on a beautiful clear winter day is an experience of a lifetime. A ski plane takes you to the top of the glacier and you are escorted down by a ski guide (avoiding crevasses!) and return to the top again by plane for a hearty lunch and another run down the glacier. The skiing is easy and relaxed and there is plenty of scenery to take in along the way.

For the more experienced skier, Alpine Guides also offer heliskiing in the Mt Cook National Park and in the Rakaia Gorge/Methven area. Alpine Guides first introduced heliskiing in New Zealand in 1976 and can also offer back country skiing and ski mountaineering.
