The Eastland region is renowned for its excellent surfing breaks, perfect swimming beaches and miles of untouched coastline. Ther perfect way to discover the hidden bays is on a road trip along the Pacific Coast Highway 35 between Opotiki and Gisborne. The block-buster movie 'The Whale Rider' was filmed here at Whangara. Home to Ngati Konohi, the descendants of Paikea, who rode a whale from the mythical Hawaiiki, the spiritual homeland of Maori.

Daily Information

Day 1.

Arrive in Rotorua and stay.

Day 2.

Explore the Rotorua and Taupo area. Visit the thermal areas and participate at a hangi concert at a local marae (meeting place).

Day 3.

Travel along Lake Rotorua and Lake Rotoiti to Whakatane. Stay at Waikawa in Te Kaha.

Day 4.

Stay at Waikawa and either explore the beaches or visit the local Maori marae and learn more about the local culture.

Day 5.

Travel along the Pacific Coast Highway. At Raukokore an Angelican Church, built about 1894, stand on a promontory near the sea. At Te Araroa see a 600-year-old pohutukawa tree and a wealth of Maori history. At Te Puia visit the hot pools and thermal spa activity. At Tolaga Bay visit NZ's finest cashmere knitwear shop.

Day 6.

Explore the Gisborne area, with it's rich culture and vineyards.

Day 7.

Travel to Napier along Hawkes Bay. Napier is famous for its Art Deco, Gannet colony, vineyards and its fruit industry.

Day 8.

Explore the Napier area.

Day 9.

Depart Napier.
