Day 1.
Arrive in Melbourne and stay for two nights. Australia’s second largest city and capital of Victoria, Melbourne is contemporary, sophisticated and international in style with an abundance of good food and wine and great shopping. Melbourne is considered the fashion capital of Australia.
Day 2.
Explore the city today.
Day 3.
Melbourne to Apollo Bay (148 km — allow 3 hours as the coastal road is windy). Head south from Melbourne along the Southern Coast, stopping in Lorne where the wide beachfront boulevard of Mountjoy Parade has a distinct Mediterranean feel with sidewalk bars and cafes. Travel on along the rugged coast of Cape Otway to Apollo Bay. From here you can take a short drive up to the Otway Ranges and take short bush walks to the waterfalls and cascades.
Day 4.
Apollo Bay to Mt Gambier (408 km — allow 5.5 hours driving). Drive onto Port Campbell and visit the Port Campbell National Park where you can view along the coastline the spectacular Twelve Apostles. These natural stone pillars rise out of the sea along what is known as the Shipwreck Coast for obvious reasons. It is also possible to see Southern Right whales along the coast between May and October. Drive onto the charming riverside town of Port Fairy, a small fishing village which has retained many of it’s original whalers cottages and old buildings. From here you drive on to Cape Bridgewater where you can visit the Australian Fur Seal Colony and onto Mt Gambier, just inside the border of South Australia.
Day 5.
Mt Gambier to Adelaide ( Inland road 418 km or Coastal road 413 km — allow 5 hours ). The Inland drive takes you through the Coonawarra wine district of South Australia, lush farmlands hosting sheep and cattle stations and onto Adelaide via the Murray River. On the Coastal route, stop off at Robe with its great fishing and sandy white beaches, Cape Jaffa and the Coorong National Park.
Day 6.
Adelaide is a stylish and friendly city with a meticulously planned city centre of wide streets, little traffic congestion and everything within easy reach — beaches, hills and wineries. By taking a 45 minute ferry ride from Cape Jervis (120 km south of Adelaide), you can also visit Kangaroo Island. For those interested in wildlife and conservation, we recommend a night on the island.
Day 7.
The Ghan. It’s an odd name for a train but in Australian history it is a living legend. For it is the ultimate journey through the heart of the continent. Board The Ghan in Adelaide and experience one of the most fascinating great train journeys of the world. Enjoy 1 night aboard this great train and marvel at the spectacular Australian landscapes.
Day 8.
Arrive in Alice Springs in the evening and stay in your hotel.
Day 9.
Take an afternoon or evening tour out to The Olgas/ Kata Tjuta for a Valley of the Winds Walk and watch the sunset over the red domes.
Day 10.
Join a day tour to Kings Canyon today. Learn about the history, geology, flora and fauna and take the opportunity to photograph the colours and formations of this stunning National Park.
Day 11.
Fly from Alice Springs to Cairns and transfer to the small holiday town of Port Douglas nearby where your accommodation is located.
Day 12.
Take a day trip onto the Great Barrier Reef with snorkelling and diving among the spectacular coral formations a popular activity.
Day 13.
Join a day tour to the Daintree Forest National Park. Experience the unique and beautiful tropical fauna and wildlife of this 76000 hectare National park - the largest tract of tropical rainforest remaining in Australia. Guided wildlife cruises explore the Daintree River and you can get close to a saltwater crocodile here.
Day 14.
Transfer back to the airport and domestic flight to Sydney.Voted one of the most beautiful cities in the world, there is plenty to see and do here.
Day 15.
Depart for home today or stay on in Sydney for a few extra days if time allows or consider the Hunter Valley or Blue Mountains.
